Running a Bakery

Hello fellow simmers,

I just started building a bakery and had my sim open it up to try it out. It seems as you can only set for sale the large dishes with several servings and not single items like a cupcake or a donut. Is there a way around this? How do you guys run your bakeries in game? It's the first time I'm properly attempting to do so and I am clueless. I know how the retail system works but not how to make a bakery seem more or less realistic.

Help!

I'm curious, is there anyway Sims would eat at the bakery? I set up a bakary often in my game, and put chairs and tables but they never used it. Has any sim tried to eat at your bakeries? We can sell Cakes to restaurants but Its not the same as cooking your own baked foods and displaying them. I also seen it on Get To Work promotional materials. Is it possible?

I am not an expert since I just started running one but they don't sit there and eat what they bought, however what I want to try next is to make some cupcakes and don't set them for sale, just put them on display as a sample for customers to try, I also have a coffee machine available, hopefully someone would grab a cupcake and a coffee and sit there. I'll let you know what I find out.

Here is how my bakery is looking so far. It's called The Rainbow Oven and is super over the top decor wise, but it suits the sim that runs it.

  • @TS1299 so I just tried putting some cupcakes on the table and had my sim brew some coffee. The customers were sitting to chat by* the cupcakes and coffee remained untouched during the whole shift.

My next plan is to create a small club that eats and drinks coffee and set the bakery as the meeting spot. Let's see!

Edit: *I meant but, not by

@AlbaWaterhouse, your bakery is adorable! Glad setting out the cupcakes worked. It's not the same if Sims aren't there eating!
  • @AlbaWaterhouse,

I haven't been in game for a while but if I remembered correctly after you make a dish there should be another option other than (grab a serving) called (pick up serving) and what it would do is allow your sim to add a serving to his/her inventory. You must repeat the action eight times in order to have all servings individually in your sims inventory. The last step should be to add it on the display and set it for sale.
  • @AlbaWaterhouse Thank You, using the club system is a great idea! I never thought of it, I will try it the mext time I will open a bakery. Thank You
  • This is something that I want to try one day. Currently playing a gardener who will open a flower shop but at a later point I will. Thanks for some fun ideas :)
  • As far as I know, there are two workarounds to get your customers eat at a bakery.

The first is to offer some goodies for free (here in Germany, some bakerys offer free samples for their customers, but normally they're just really small pieces of cake, bread, ...). Sims will grab these and eat them.

The second is to put the coffee object from Get Together on the lot. As with the first method, you will not make money that way.

So both ways are just to add to the illusion, they will not further your business financially.
