Scared to update...

Hi all! I was wondering if I could get your insight. I haven't updated my game since Werewolves, and I'm still happily playing.

I want to update my game and possibly get HSY, but I'm scared as to what bugs there still are. I know the main patch for HSY created so many bugs, and I was wondering if you could give me some advice on any lingering bugs. Are the following still happening, and if they are, are there workarounds or fixes?

1. Needs bars don't change colour and sims die of starvation
2. Sims coming home from work early
3. Prom/Graduation not happening
4. Only one sim at a time can use the HSY fair rides

I know I'll have to update my mods etc (I use very few anyway). Any advice on the above or in general that you can give me would be very much appreciated! :)

I haven't encountered any of the game-breaking bugs. What I have encountered are:

    1. I can't get two of my sims in the same household ride a fair ride with other sims. Only one of my played ones can ride with someone at a time.

    2. My sims also can't claim a locker. That may be because I had them claim them in another save, and decided to move them to another save for a fresh start. I had them drop out of school and re-enroll and it didn'tfix anything. I'm not too bothered by that because there isn't much gameplay involving lockers anyway. It's not like they store books in them or have backpacks.

I wanted to add to my comment.

I discovered another bug. When my toddler aged up, her dad had to reintroduce himself to her, even though they have a full relationship. Also, he's an alien but he had the option to sniff and introduce, which is a werewolf interaction.

Apparently this bug has been around since November 2020, according to AHQ. It seems it's related to the Beloved trait but after removing it, he still had to introduce himself to his toddler.

Don't do it. I was playing offline too, but made the mistake of updating. It's completely changed my game and not in a way I enjoy. The "Wants and Fears" are a pain. And not sure how you play, but I turned off the "spotlight" for celebrities (I even delete all the in game celebrities because I hate the disruption they cause). While I still have this turned off, I have two of my sims who have become celebrities because of their jobs. So now my own sims are causing the disruptions. I don't own HSY so I can't tell you anything about that part of things. I haven't gotten it yet because I'm still annoyed on how it has effected my game by just existing... so I'm throwing a tantrum of sorts. But let me tell you, I was a lot happier with my game before I updated.

Oh... and another thing... after I updated... every plant in every square garden box just disappeared. Nothing there. And the sim I was playing at the time was a gardener who had reached the top of his field. All those perfect and spliced plants were gone. The last time this happened to me was for the Vampires update. You can bet I won't be using those anymore.
  • Thanks for everybody's input! Going by your experiences, I'm at least going to wait for August's main patch to see if that fixes any issues (and hopefully doesn't cause any major new ones!). Then I'll see how I feel. Thanks all!

I still can't vote at the prom.

Fairly certain it's a Mod but have yet to isolate it as it requires setting up a save that is 'just about to go to the prom' - and that's a popup you get with no warning that you can just say "give me five minutes then I'll go".

(I need to look at what time it's set to on the calendar and save a new game with no mods in it just before that).

I also get mood errors constantly - but there was finally an update to the script mod that reports errors so it was stop saying "a whim broke" and start blaming something. Now it just says "a whim broke" and then every so often blames something - so I've found one updated but still bad mod since then, but I imagine there are more.

EA made some massive changes to the ways moods and traits and aspirations work - which is territory a LOT of modders mess with because of the common complaint that these things don't actually impact gameplay - so there are mods that make them actually impact gameplay - and all of those broke.

    • Some of them are fixed.
    • Some we're finding have been abandoned.
    • Some were fixed in ways that broke other things because this modders fixes by going up and that one fixed by going down and now you have two mods that conflict that used to work well together but the mod authors don't have the other modder's mod so don't see the issue...

I suspect it will be months before things are fully 'normal' for people who use a decent set of mods. As long as my game can limp along after some error screens I've been just getting used to Sims now being a bit like Skyrim - constant errors but I can pretend to not see them and keep going if I only use 2/3rds of the mods I want.

For a lot of people it seems the bigger issue is the game is even more buggy if you DON'T use mods... Everyday I'm grabbing a new set of mods designed to fix bugs in the game.

So the age old advice of "just play without mods for a while" isn't better advice right now.

The ideal advice is "play with the mods that fix bugs but only the ones that don't conflict with other bug fix mods which is something nobody documents so figure it out." ;)
