I've never played the active careers from GtW yet, but have a child Sim who will be going into the Scientist career once she is grown up. I don't want to look at a guide on the career, because I don't want a bunch of spoilers, but I would like to know if I will short change my self the experience of doing that profession if she gets a Physics degree and bypasses the lower career levels. Or are the higher career levels and the lower career levels pretty much just the same activities, so the degree will only shorten the grind?I'll major her in something else with similiar skill requirements if it would be doing myself a disservice to skip career levels, basically. For anyone willing to give me a non-spoilery answer, I appreciate it.

If you take the fast track option of the career, it is more difficult because the team have not updated Get to work pack to account for the advanced entry. Without spoiling too much, the sim scientist requires inspiration points to unlock new inventions and discoveries and that takes time. The required daily tasks seem to be tied to the expected progression tied to the sims caeer level. In another words you will be asked to complete tasks that you can't fulfill yet because your sim hasnt yet gained the inspiration points needed to unlock them. It's not impossible, but it is more difficult. Hope that helps?

To be honest, if you build up the required skills the career progression is pretty quick, but you still need time to gain those inspiration points. Maybe you could do a day release type thing, that way, if your sims ever wants to change careers they have the degree and other fast track options.

It's a problem as you do need those flora items for your inventions. I often end up using the online gardening shop, particularly roses, which costs you personally. You can buy seed packs on the lab's budgets, though you end up buying multiple packs just to get what you need.

I have also not done the Scientist career yet. I was hoping to wait until the devs fixed the plant growth bug at the science lab. However, as it is starting to appear that the bug may never be fixed, I started to consider going the college degree route as well. How essential is having access to harvestables at the lab to the career? Can I work around the bug by growing plants on my Sim's home lot & bringing those harvestables to the lab?

For your additional information, there are other problems with the scientist career at present:

the rocket platform doesnt currently work (you can't build a rocket)
the invention device's construction animation is not working properly

Thank you for that additional info as well. I think that I am okay concerning the rocket glitch, as I believe that bug came with Cottage Living (unless there's another rocket issue) & I have delayed buying CoL until the rocket issue is fixed.

@EternalSunshine, if you are willing to use mods, there are fixes for both the gardening and rocket issues:

Rocket Building Fix
Two different fixes for the gardening issue (only need one of them):

Plants Spawn fruit at 11 am
Night Shift for Scientists

Personally, I just plan on using testingcheats to spawn the fruit when my scientist gets to work. It's an extra step, but it saves me needing to worry about one more mod to update.

@Stormkeep - Thank you. I was aware of those mods. However, for better or for worse, I'm trying to stay with a vanilla game, at least until they finally end TS4, as I don't want to deal with having to constantly update mods.

That's a good idea about using testingcheats on the plants. I may do that as well.
