I don't think getting sad from selling pets is trait related. I've had a premade sim (Ulrike Faust, Perfectionist, Art lover, Creative) become sad from simply WATCHING another sim give up a kitten for adoption.
Ulrike was over at Katerina Lynxes and the kitten in question (Bartholomew jnr.) was intended for her. Since I couldn't make Katerina give the little guy to Ulrike directly, I had her give him up and then Ulrike went home and adopted him.
