I think it was Graham who said that sentiments last for varying lengths of time and they fade away, but you can also prolong the sentiment by repeating the action that caused it. Frankly I wouldn't want my sims stuck with strong sentiments their whole life, I think it's normal that they fade away after a while. Now we need to see how long certain sentiments last by default, for some sims they may last longer depending maybe on their traits. I imagine it will be possible to mod them if you want certain sentiments to last longer.
