Hm. I do have a maxed painter, with some reward traits enhancing his pay, but §3500 is about as much as I see from even a Masterpiece sold to a gallery. But he also makes absurd amounts of money, and raises multiple times a week, as a Style Influencer, so I have not felt compelled to press for more from Painting yet.
What I find in general is my Sims struggle with bills early in their careers and have to scramble, but past a point, even with a house crammed with All The Best Things, I eventually am earning money faster than I can spend it.
Could be to do with size of the painting maybe? I always get more for the large ones.
I could be wrong, but if memory serves me right I think you earned more on paintings in TS3, plus they actually had fun while painting.
