I think a lot of people think of merfolk as colorful, happy, and good, but merfolk are of the sea. The sea is neither cruel nor kind, and just as the ocean can be calm and beautiful, it can turn dark and full of turmoil.
The different biomes of the sea can reflect this. From dense and eerie kelp forests to the deep sea trenchs, there's a great deal of diversity represented by the ocean that goes beyond the warm coral filled waters of Sulani.
