It sounds to me like you are leaning heavily to merman. If that's what you want, I say go for it. It's your story.
Sooner or later, you'll meet him in mine... and he'll be different from yours. That's what makes these stories great, IMO.
@luciusstorm I completely agree. I do think the merman route feels right for him in my story, but I don’t want to ignore the popular vote.
Just brainstorming here...
Maybe your Alexander is largely oblivious of the magical worlds... but maybe he has the spellcaster spark born in him. He's just never explored it. Now, Alexander himself is confronted with the choice... to embrace his family's blood as a spellcaster or to embrace love as a merman. Let Alexander and the story itself decide the outcome.
