If you look at the Plumbob when merchildren age up, you can see if they are hybrid compatible.
As you can see, Zalen has the Human Plumbob, but he's a natural born merman. This is a glitch that makes occult hybrids possible. It happens when merchildren age up or cheats are used to age them up. I didn't want to make Zalen anything other than a merman so I fixed it by making him eat mermadic kelp before school.
