Do you have any mods? If so try removing your mods folder and deleting the localthumbscache.package in your Sims 4 folder. I personally haven’t had this issue, canceling the event has worked just fine for me. If you have no mods, you may want to try repairing your game. If neither of those suggestions help, you may want to report it here as a bug.
