It is a single player game as in you don't play with your real life friends connected to a server.
But, you can play your current active sim when visiting a sim's house. Just hit M on your keyboard to open the map and travel with your current sim.
There's a lot of things you can do in the game. The cool thing about this game is there is no right or wrong way of playing it. If you don't want your sim to interact with random strangers, you can get your sim to loads of other things like just drinking or dancing at the lounge or bar. Or maybe stay at home and build their skills such as painting or playing the piano. Get a pet (you need a dlc for this), etc etc.
