Sometimes requests for "why do you want these" aren't because the people asking really don't know we want them: they're gathering ammunition to use to help get those things at all or get them bumped up in priority, or they're figuring out what those things ought to do for us. I've been told this - both, at different times - outright by developers before (not here).
OK. Kind of ridiculous, but if that's true, okeydokey. But someone made the original decision that dishwashers weren't necessary, did they not? Would you like to take a stab at explaining that? Ran out of time to make a dishwasher, perhaps? That's sure not the impression I got when it was mentioned in the Tech Talk thread.
Besides, my actual point was that they simplified the game as much as they possibly could because they decided that TS3 was too expensive to make and maintain, and who knows what else has contributed to this. As a result we got a dumbed down sims game that doesn't even include a system for sims to decide sexual orientation. And from what I've seen they are working with a shoestring budget so personally I'm not expecting a lot of big improvements or additions for this game. Not unless their budget gets increased, anyway.
Edit: another strong possibility for why there is no system for determining orientation is the original online social game design. If that was just supposed to be the players sim and the sims of friends who would be controlling their own avatars, then the only sims that would have mattered in that regard are the NPCs, and they're more like background decor, much like the backdrops. Maybe they didn't think it was important for them, either, since they would do whatever your sim wanted them to.
