I've been playing since Sims 1: In Sims 1, you REALLY had to micromanage everything, and even then, their social needs went low because if you didn't already have a good relationship with a Sim, they didn't want to chat over the phone so you had to get out to a community lot to socialize.
So...Sims 4 social life: Always make sure to greet the neighbors during the Welcoming Committee social event or you will have a bad relationship with the (usually 3) neighbors that come to visit. Sometimes the neighbors take too long to get to your door, so pause the game and look for all of them to greet them. (Queue up the actions).
I find I don't even have to turn free will off if I pause the game or keep it running at normal (not fast or super fast) speed. I am careful to keep my Sim's actions queued up at all times, even when they are sleeping. When they are sleeping, I queue up actions related to their most urgent needs...Sleep, bladder, hunger, then hygiene. I remember numerous times my Sims have wet themselves because I satisfied their hunger need before their bladder need. Fun and social are always dead last on the priority Sim needs to fulfill, since they won't die or pass out if these are not satisfied. Bladder is always before hygiene of course, since not meeting bladder needs results in not meeting hygiene needs.
Some actions a Sim will continue to perform until their needs drop into the red (and in Sims 1 this still wouldn't kick it out unless it was hunger, bladder, or sleep need reaching zero). These actions are typically skill-building actions like reading skill books, or swimming or dancing or practicing singing or practicing a musical instrument. Be careful when having your Sim perform these actions or they may miss work! When you get the notification that work is in 2 hours or less, reduce the number of actions in your Sim's queue immediately so that your Sim doesn't miss work, since the "go to work" action always appears at the end of the queue.
