In my story Jacques was a criminal mastermind, a kind of Moriarty, who works with the various criminal cartels, like the Landgraabs and Altos, but isn't part of them. His wife was killed in a tragically failed attempt to assassinate him... a fact he hides because, among other reasons, there is more to be gained by mystery than sympathy.
