Gardening is especially profitable if you have money trees. Lots of them. 😄Also, I heard orchids sell for quite a lot. Don't think I ever grew them with any of my sims.
Raising and selling growfruit is also lucrative. (Most of my sims garden and growfruit is the best fertilizer in the game.)
Where do you get growfruit?
If you have Outdoors Retreat, you can get Growfruit from the Ranger Station at Granite Falls when on vacation.

You're also able to occasionally catch one while fishing in the higher level areas, like the secret lots. (If you don't know about them, look them up; they're kind of cool. There's one each in Willowcreek, Oasis Springs, Granite Falls, and Sixam.)
I have discovered two before: Sylvan Glade and Forgotten Grotto.

You can fertilize with any type of fish or plant.👍
Oh, you can use fish for fertilizing your plants, true, just like in RL. But over all in TS4, the best fertilizer is the Growfruit. Though, I honestly haven't tested that out with the advent of Horse Ranch, so the top level horse manure may be the best now.
I didn't know that about growfruit either. My sim has 3 horses and 6 chickens. I've been using their manure to fertilize her plants. The growfruit thing is interesting to know since she just got one in a seed packet. I think it was a rare packet, but it might have been the uncommon packet.
