Right. There are mods that function as entire expansion packs, basically. There's a mod for a resort/hotel. There's a mod to own a live in business. There's a mod to follow your sims to school and participate in classes with them; you'll even get in trouble if you use your phone/talk to another sim while in class. There's a mod that came out a few years ago that even mimicked most of Get Famous (I mean, it literally mimics it. There's a fame system, paparazzi, annoying fans, whatever). There are mods to add witches, werewolves (complete with a custom transformation), mermaids, genies, etc to your game. Lol, people even make their own stuff packs.
So, you're right. If you wanted something, there is most likely a mod for it. And the devs are fully aware of that. They know their game is going to be modded to death; there's even an official forum for it. Mods have been a part of the Sims community almost since the beginning. I wouldn't even be surprised if things are "missing" because the devs know someone else had it covered.
Point is, if you really wanted something, google search it and it's probably available somewhere. Leave the devs alone to work on something that can't just be created by some random person in their spare time.
