Don't know what Spiderman or Iron Man's got to do with the price of cheese. Anyhow I've never played TS2 or 3 so I'm not missing anything!
Not to sound rude at all, but if you've never played 2 or 3 after claiming you've played the original sims, I don't think this discussion is right for you. You kinda missed all the awesome key features that 2 and 3 introduced and stuck with- which stemmed from the original game. Those SAME key features are what's missing from this installment of the Sims.
Whether you mean to or not, it is pretty rude to tell someone they don't belong in a thread on a public forum. And I believe, against the rules (waits for @Scobre to post the rules, :p ).

I don't understand why people complain that TS4 is not like TS2 or 3? If TS4 was exactly the same as 2 and 3, what's the point of it?
TS4 can be different from TS3 and TS2 in many ways, such as graphics, background music, settings, ui, and some other features. But, there are some core functions should never be removed just to make differences, Such as you have to create sims, you have to build houses for them, you have to make them socialize with other sims, etc. If these core functions were removed, it cannot be called Sims anymore, or at least can't be called a completed Sims game.
I think the build mode functions I mentioned above belong to core functions of Sims and should never be removed.
I don't think they removed "core" features just to make differences. I do think they're constantly evaluating what will work best in this iteration (i.e., how well they can implement terrain tools with this engine so that the benefit balances out the time/expense cost). I do get that people assume certain things added in previous games should become base features in future games, unfortunately, where do you draw the line? The list of 80 "missing" features that people made before TS4 came out is, I think, a good example of how much is too much.
Toddlers is a no-brainer and should've been included in the base game. I think almost everyone can agree that's a core lifestage. CASt, terrain tools, curved pools, and different stair/elevator options would be awesome but I can't bring myself to label them as core features. I can obviously play the game without them and enjoy it. Would I like them back? I'd love terrain tools, curved pools, elevators. I'd love multi-level foundations and public space editing. We can do a version of a split-level but I would like to have a real option for that. Extra staircases (spiral, elevators, etc.)? I don't expect those in the base game. Cars and garages? It's not something that breaks the game for me so I'm pretty ambivalent about them, though I do get why people want them back, of course. Again, though, I find it hard to call them base game content. Though having schools buses and carpools back would be nice. Or, better yet, I'd personally love to see the public transportation open up (trams, riverboats, a public bus system).
