Now, to what should be added, I think if you have a higher level of music, you should make better tips and a bit more often, as in more NPCs coming by. Granted, I haven't played too much with this feature, but I haven't seen anyone on here going wow, music makes a lot.
You can still make money with music and tips. I've tested it. But the difference is that you put 5 times the effort and still you earn only one tenth of the money that a writer or painter gets. Nerfing these two professions would remove the ability to make fast money altogether, so it would be more appropriate to add more ways to make the same, if not more money than writers and painters with the same amount of effort.
And i agree that it also looks quite strange. Programmers, businessmen and doctors usually make much more than writers and painters. It's only a handful of them that manage to write bestsellers and create masterpieces and generally make a fortune.

Maybe one career lets you take more time off and work less while another gives you more money, but they should be balanced enough so that one or two aren't clearly superior to others. This is just bad balancing of gameplay and bad/lazy programming by the developers.
The problem is that writing and painting are not careers. These are skills which with minimal effort can overshadow entire weeks of doing daily tasks and other career related actions. For example, i was recently playing a sim in the business career. I was at the top of my career and still barely making money. Suddenly i decided to start painting. No creative traits or anything. And behold! My bank account literally exploded? What's the point in even having a job when you can do better without it?
