I don't know if it works, but I do the things, that I believe makes them happy.
Like if I believe my character is promiscuous, then I have them woohoo, a one night stand.
A Good Drink Could make a Sim happy.
Eating their feelings.
Good Company
Playing a video Game, or their favorite hobby to get their mind off of it.
