What rank is your spellcaster? If they're at the top I'm not sure the experimenting adds anything.
The ranks are Apprentice, Neophyte, Acolyte, Adept, Master, Virtuoso
My sim, Julianna, is Virtuoso rank but it's been 5 years and I've completely forgotten most of the gameplay.
