You could always take the items out of the family inventory and place them in the house, then put them into the YA's inventory to take with them.
The only problem with your suggestion is I have YET to find a way to put anything into a Sims personal inventory when it comes to furniture. Yes, they can keep their school books, their private journals and the toddlers and children can keep toys in theirs, but forget brining the TV you got for your birthday. I just tend to furnish the house my Sim is set to move into, prior to the move, then I use FreeRealEstate On to move them in.
