Hi @IngeJones. I was disappointed the chests didn't work like the ones in TS3 as well. I really like sorting and storing my collectables and sharing objects between Sims.
The code for the storage chest looks like it's a modified toybox, but with a new inventory type called 'STORAGE_CHEST'. I found that I could copy the tuning and change the inventory type to 'SIM' which allowed for adding any inventory item into a chest object: https://simsinthewoods.wordpress.com/2016/02/21/ts4-download-storage-crate-test-version/ You could make an override mod for the storage chests that changed the inventory type to 'SIM'. The tuning is 'object_Spooky_Storage_Chest' '127277'.
I haven't tested it extensively, but nobody has come back to me with any issues.
I wish they'd look at inventory objects some more. I dislike that they don't allow us to add any inventory object. I dislike the shared inventory between objects which make sorting items impossible, and if I'm playing apartment style the neighbours keep stealing the food from the fridges! And I'd like any sim to be able to access them on community lots: I used to share items between households like this in TS3, like a swop shop.
edit: (Saw your post about the museum) Yeah, storage chests are pretty useless on community lots. They seem to have restrictions depending on if your Sim owns the lot or is visiting. I placed one down at a cafe and the sim I placed it with could use it, switched household and the new sim couldn't drag anything to it. The sim who placed it didn't own the lot, so it appears the objects are somehow tied to the Sim that places them too. It makes the chests much less versatile than in TS3! As long as Sims don't autonomously take things from the storage chests, any sim should be able to be directed to access them!
