Blame people that complained about too many stuff packs. They’re the reason why we get fewer packs and thus fewer patches.

I don’t really agree on that. It could very well be a case of “correlation doesn’t equal causation”. Also, there’s no need to blame simmers here. They can say that they don’t like stuff packs as much as they please, but at the end of the day, it’s ultimately up to Maxis on whether or not they act on it.
One theory I have for the lack of stuff packs is that because The Sims 4 will be 5 years old this year, and they say there’s still “years of content” to come, it may boil down to limitations. Eventually, The Sims 4, with all of its content installed, will have significant performance drops as the engine reaches its limits, as all game engines do. Given this iteration is running longer than the previous ones, and has more content packs, the devs may have a timeline or a rough idea of how much more they can add before things take a turn for the worse. It would make sense then for them to cut smaller packs (e.g., stuff packs) to make room for more game packs/expansion packs, because that’s where the gameplay is.
Another theory is after the backlash My First Pet Stuff received, some higher ups saw the drop in revenue next to the phrase “stuff pack” and told the team to can the whole thing.
Neither of these theories, however, account for the lack of patches. It’s apparent that the game has A LOT of bugs, ranging from “minor cosmetic” to “tear-your-hair-out game breaking”, so an explanation for the patch drought when there is such an outcry still eludes me. I do hope that they don’t start to only release patches when they have new content (free or paid) to follow.
