I'm not the kind of person who gets mad when someone gifts you an ugly Christmas sweater - they didn't have to, and it's the thought that counts. Their blog post said that they would be celebrating all month on social media, and that the hot tub was the gift. So that does make it seem like that was it, though we technically don't know that yet. I don't personally find the hot tub to my taste either, but I'm not mad about it or anything - I just won't use it.
When you support a franchise for 20 years, it's a lot like being married to someone for 20 years. When a 20 year anniversary rolls around, it's normal to expect some love and attention and appreciation for all of the love and support that you gave for all of that time. What we got here was a badly recolored hot tub and a reminder to buy some merch.
It's the equivalent of your spouse giving you a really cheap card from the dollar store and telling you to go buy them a very nice present. Of course it's going to feel like a slap across the face. The last few years we've been handed box after box of sopping wet barnyard mud for our money, and now we get told don't forget to buy them a gift. Of course it's going to come across to some as the corporate face slap that it is.
I definitely understand what it is that people find upsetting about the situation, and it's not unreasonable when you think about it.
I think that actually is the issue, it's the thought that counts. And this gift reveals there was no thought at all, like you so beautifully paraphrase in the last paragraph.
