Yes, they have made some bizarre choices, but I have gotten used to that as they have done some strange things all the way through TS4. Huge cupcake machine, massive telescope, whirlwind animation for removing shoes, making eating shorter but leaving hand washing to take ages, sniffing clean rooms all the darn time... the list would be very long!
I can understand about the cows and llamas though. I imagine a heap of routing issues if they were allowed to roam free which would not occur with the chickens as they are so much smaller.
