I think that the option for having a sim where whatever they want out of each gender's closet is great, but I don't think it makes up for the lack of male clothing/hair styles/beards/etc.
It sucks that males don't have as much to work with as females and saying "they could just wear female clothes" is a bit insulting to any person who wants to create whatever male they wish with whatever male clothes they can think of. It's not a matter of males being able to wear female clothes, it's the fact that they have to in order to get variety and that's a shame.
