I agree with the OP too, I gave TS3 a lot of my attention, I have played most of the sims games, not just for the computer but also for console and it was nice to see something different from TS2 when it first came out. When we were able to download TS2 for free I saw all the things that weren't in TS3 that I forgot about and even if you hate it we all know how well that game did. So I knew I'd give TS4 a good chance I don't feel I can make a good judgement on a game based on missing features. In TS2 I made a sim for one of my other sims but ended up pairing her up with a townie instead, they had a full life together when I decided TS3 was out of the doghouse for driving me crazy I re-installed the base game and took the pairing in there. I thought I was satisfied with the change, finally I took them into TS4, the change is really great. I don't know if anyone else noticed as much as I have but when two sims love each other they really really love each other.
I thought the game was glitching because Christina (my sim) wouldn't do anything with John(TS2 townie) that I told her to do, then I looked at her list and saw that her actions were being replaced by what John wanted. Of course I noticed this more with free will on high but still, John wanted to prove his love for his wife and didn't care what I thought about it. I haven't gotten to play too much as it is, but I got my husband to play with me and I have to say it's way too much fun to make stories for these lively sims with him. I did see Christina at the bar though, either she glitched out or she had the baby I left her with before making new sims. Aside from the emotions, and the fact that the little moodlets actually matter now, I love the clothes, shoes, accessories...I love quite a few things actually lol. I even have most of my graphics on low and still the game looks so nice who knew I could really sim watch while my sims were busy taking care of their daily chores
