The primary advantage of the Calendar is when playing in multi-sim households. As it is now, the calendar tells you all the household sims who have work/school scheduled for the day, so you can more easily see what days are open for doing things. And as it shows all the sims schedules together, you can also figure out what times everyone will be home quicker.
It is also easier to see how close together birthdays are. I sometimes age sims up together if their birthdays are going to be within a few days of each other.
Yes, you can figure all this out by looking at each sim, but seeing it all together is certainly quicker.
So if they are indeed bringing the calendar into the base game, I'm guessing it's for something that could affect multiple sims within a household - such as school holidays.
