It's beginning to look like an awful lot of people are forgetting there are human beings behind the avatars and usernames. And those human beings have feelings.
I understand a lot of the upset, particularly on Twitter, has been because a lot of people were hyped at the thought of a farming expansion and as a result, the following announcement of Eco Lifestyle has infuriated a large number of people. I understand that. While I personally prefer this theme over the farming one, I do understand why people were upset. I don't, however, understand why that should lead to a number of "So you're the one to hold responsible," comments to one of the Gurus when she mentioned this being her first pack as a producer.
You can like or dislike a theme for a pack. We're a lovely, diverse bunch in this community and a very large community at that! The larger the community, the more ideas for themes, packs, updates, improvements etc that are on the table. That's great - I love hearing people's ideas. It does, however, mean that with every pack release, a lot of people will love the theme, a lot will be disappointed and a lot will feel indifferent. People will buy the pack for different reasons - maybe there's an object you've been wanting for ages. Maybe that new skill that's coming is exactly what you wanted. Or maybe that hair is really cute. But it doesn't matter - if the pack makes you happy, that's great.
If it doesn't, that's okay. Because nobody can be expected to love all the packs that come out. Some people really, truthfully do. That's great; they've got lots of packs to have fun with. Others feel that some packs don't add enough for their gameplay. That's fair enough. We don't all play the same style.
Over the last two days, on Twitter particularly, I saw a lot of comments berating the developers for not producing the farming pack, or for recycling a theme. We don't know they're not producing a farming pack; just because it isn't this one, doesn't mean it isn't coming. We don't know that it isn't. But just because this one isn't farming, or generations or whichever pack is preferred in individual case, doesn't mean this one is automatically bad. I'm looking forward to it; I'm quite excited. I know I'll enjoy this pack. I know because from what I saw in the trailer, there were a number of features I could already see fitting my current game perfectly. Will it be my favourite pack? I've no idea because I haven't played it yet. Will it be the best pack they've brought out? Again, I haven't played so I don't know. Will it be the worst, or smallest? No idea. I'll know when it releases and I play it. All I do know for certain is that it's shown some features I will use a lot. So I know I'll be getting it. Equally, I know a lot of people are on the fence and perhaps aren't sure what the pack will actually do for their game. Quite reasonable - there will be at least two other opportunities for a closer look in the next few weeks to help people make up their minds. Those, alongside the trailer, will help to give a more detailed impression of what the pack has to offer.
Now, I was surprised at the number of people who had decided this pack should be a Game Pack and that there's not enough content to warrant expansion pack prices. The reason I was surprised by this is because I don't feel there's enough been shown yet to completely justify such a statement. We've seen a trailer that is 1 and a half minutes long and a few renders. That's it. It seemed odd to me for people to have judged the pack already when we haven't seen much yet. That aside, a lot of the same people then started accusing the developers of never listening, of producing poor quality packs (much more strongly worded on Twitter but I digress), of producing a boring pack. Then, finally, seeking someone to blame because the pack isn't what they expect. But how do they know, when it doesn't release until next month?
We can love or hate the theme, be excited or disappointed, enthusiastic or not. Either way, we're all right. Because it's right for the individual. So the name calling, from both sides, isn't fair and drags the whole community down. That's why I felt the whole community was so negative the other night; because the name calling from both sides was unnecessary.
That turned into a much longer post than I anticipated, and I apologise for that. Ultimately, whatever you think of the upcoming pack, I hope you're able to enjoy your game today, regardless of what may or may not be coming ?
