I have a rule of not creating sims intentionally based after people in real life and myself. I can disassociate myself from the game by not having anyone in there I know personally, so I dont feel "bad" when terrible things happen to my sims. Plus my game is far from family-friendly, and I REALLY dont want to watch sim versions of people I know in situations I regularly put my sims in. Too awkward. :|
