I was firmly in the "good riddance" camp, because in previous games toddlers were something you chained to a skilling toy and forgot about, but I really apprecciate the new ones.
Thy're now sims in their own right and part of the family, like here with one dad studying:

Portable toys make waiting for papa to please please finish his afternoon class already bearable for the wee ones:

Getting read to sleep simultaneously (I make believe the dads read from two copies of the same book, taking turns):

@permanentrose Can you link to the paint toy? Does it splash the toddler when interacted with or are the paint stains CAS cc?
