I was constantly doing the same thing: start with a single sim, they meet someone and get a family going. Before I know it, they barely have time to talk to eachother. And certainly no time to experience what's out there.
Babies doesn't exsist in my game, I age them up immediately after coming home from hospital/birth at home. The toddlers are great this time around, but when you've played thru a few, it gets tedious and repetitive. The children are the same, although there is a lot more you can do with them. I've started to cheat my way through those ages, which is very easy to do with the UICheats mod. I don't know if you play with mods or not, but that's one to get, for sure. It's great for the "all sims need to be friends with every other sim" thing too. I cheat with teens too, although that's when a sim starts getting interesting for me. Just some of those values from Parenthood are a chore to do. Manners and Responsibility, easy peasy. The rest? Not so much.
Also, when I feel the game is going stale, I do what others have suggested here, a challenge. Rags to Riches and Teen on the run being my favorites, but there are a boatload of different challenges out there. Or I just play a different household in the same save. My first saves were one family only, now I've branched out and play many different ones. I can always come back to my original family whenever I want.
If all our suggestions fail, find another game to play! :) It can refresh your interest in sims, like another game did for me.
