TS4U - Semester 1, Course 1: Home Improvement

University Hub
Welcome to the 'Home Improvement' course.

This course's purview is to highlight building considerations before, during, and after a home is built/remodeled, from finite details, to larger details, such as location.

Location, Location, Location
Based on the client's needs, which neighborhood/World would be the most ideal?

  • The client wants a home with a waterside lot, neighbors out of sight (they still want neighbors, though), and lots of trees.

  • Cavalier Cove (Brindleton Bay)
  • Llama Lagoon (Newcrest)
  • Deadgrass Isle (Brindleton Bay)
  • Parched Prospect (Oasis Springs)

  • The client wants access to a secluded place where no one else can get to (unless they invite them).

  • Spice Market (San Myshuno)
  • Forgotten Hollow
  • Foundry Cove (Willow Creek)
  • Magnolia Promenade

  • The client hates the snow. If it does snow, they'd like it not to hang around long.

  • San Myshuno
  • Strangerville
  • Mt. Komorebi
  • Forgotten Hollow

    Construction
Where would one even find that thing?

  • The client wants their walls plastered in newspapers.

  • "Wall Patterns" > "Wallpapers"
  • "Wall Patterns" > "Misc."
  • "Wall Patterns" > "Tile"
  • "Decorations" > "Wall Decorations"

  • The client states that they want frogs by the pond, but not "living" ones.

  • "Outdoor Water Decor" > "Pool Objects"
  • "Outdoor Water Decor" > "Pond Effects"
  • "Outdoor Water Decor" > "Fountain Decorations"
  • "Decorations" > "Sculptures"

  • We're not installing a roof, just another floor with no walls. The client wants a skylight, but won't let us use "bb.moveobjects", so we'll need glass flooring.

  • "Floor Patterns" > "Misc."
  • "Decorations" > "Misc."
  • "Decorations" > "Rugs"
  • "Surfaces" > "Misc."

    Settling In
    What would work best?

  • The client wants a place to sleep (not just nap), but doesn't want a bed.

  • A Couch
  • An Ottoman
  • A Tent
  • A lounge chair

  • The client doesn't want to have to use skills to make money. They also don't want to build skills whilst doing so.

  • A gardening pot
  • The bee box
  • An easel
  • A massage table

  • The client claims they're a "magician" and wants to light something using " fire magic", but not set the surrounding area on fire during the attempt.

  • A candle
  • Fireworks
  • A fireplace
  • A grill

    Remodeling
    What needs to change/go?

  • The client wants to convert to off-the-grid. They've replaced/gotten rid of everything except for: a rocketship, cauldron, drone, and recycler.

  • The cauldron
  • The recycler
  • The drone
  • The rocketship

  • The client is complaining about frequently breaking items. We've checked the property and found that the place is filthy, full of bugs, haunted, and right by a volcano.

  • The "Filthy" lot trait
  • The "Spooky" lot trait
  • The "Volcanic Activity" lot trait
  • The "Creepy Crawlies" lot trait

  • The client wants an en-suite with shower and toilet, but the smallest possible size. They have 3 spaces to consider: 3x1 closet, a 2x2 office, and a 1x1 corner space where their Servo recharges. They've allowed bb.moveobjects for this.

  • The closet
  • The office
  • The corner space

    Answer Key:

    Location, Location, Location
Based on the client's needs, which neighborhood/World would be the most ideal?

  • The client wants a home with a waterside lot, neighbors out of sight (they still want neighbors, though), and lots of trees.

  • Cavalier Cove (Brindleton Bay) - Cavalier Cove (Cats and Dogs) has a lot right by the (wadeable) creek that runs right through into the ocean. Most lots are separated by terrain, distance, and trees.
  • Llama Lagoon (Newcrest)
  • Deadgrass Isle (Brindleton Bay)
  • Parched Prospect (Oasis Springs)

  • The client wants access to a secluded place where no one else can get to (unless they invite them).

  • Spice Market (San Myshuno)
  • Forgotten Hollow
  • Foundry Cove (Willow Creek) - The magical tree leads to Sylvan Glade. Unless someone else is invited over, only the active sim will appear there (not counting the tiny faeries and invisible red-eyed creatures that live there).
  • Magnolia Promenade

  • The client hates the snow. If it does snow, they'd like it not to hang around long.

  • San Myshuno
  • Strangerville - It's a desert. Even if it snows, it's never much, and doesn't hang around long.
  • Mt. Komorebi
  • Forgotten Hollow

    Construction
Where would one even find that thing?

  • The client wants their walls plastered in newspapers.

  • "Wall Patterns" > "Wallpapers" - There is a basegame wallpaper made up of newspapers. In English it's known as "Classified Walls", and is the first entry in the "Wallpapers" section.
  • "Wall Patterns" > "Misc."
  • "Wall Patterns" > "Tile"
  • "Decorations" > "Wall Decorations"

  • The client states that they want frogs by the pond, but not "living" ones.

  • "Outdoor Water Decor" > "Pool Objects"
  • "Outdoor Water Decor" > "Pond Effects"
  • "Outdoor Water Decor" > "Fountain Decorations" - There's a Frog-shaped fountain from 'Backyard Stuff'.
  • "Decorations" > "Sculptures"

  • We're not installing a roof, just another floor with no walls. The client wants a skylight, but won't let us use "bb.moveobjects", so we'll need glass flooring.

  • "Floor Patterns" > "Misc."
  • "Decorations" > "Misc." - Island Living came with a 2x2 glass flooring known as "Crystal Clear" (in English). It costs 220 simoleons.
  • "Decorations" > "Rugs"
  • "Surfaces" > "Misc."

    Settling In
    What would work best?

  • The client wants a place to sleep (not just nap), but doesn't want a bed.

  • A Couch
  • An Ottoman
  • A Tent - Sims can relax, nap, and sleep in tents (Outdoor Retreat and Snowy Escape).
  • A lounge chair

  • The client doesn't want to have to use skills to make money. They also don't want to build skills whilst doing so.

  • A gardening pot
  • The bee box - The bee box (Seasons) doesn't take skills to maintain, just bee-friend the bees, keep termites away, and give them attention whenever they're "irritated" or "enraged". They'll produce bees wax, honey, and swarms which can fetch collectibles for you. If you've completed the 'Curator' aspiration (which also needs no skills), crystals, elements, fossils, and metals will be even more valuable if sold to the Simsonian than dragging them to the sell area in the inventory, so bees are little money-makers.
  • An easel
  • A massage table

  • The client claims they're a "magician" and wants to light something using " fire magic", but not set the surrounding area on fire during the attempt.

  • A candle
  • Fireworks
  • A fireplace - Mages (Realm of Magic) with the 'Inferniate' spell can light certain objects, such as bonfires (Island Living and Get Together), campfires (Outdoor Retreat), and fireplaces safely.
  • A grill

    Remodeling
    What needs to change/go?

  • The client wants to convert to off-the-grid. They've replaced/gotten rid of everything except for: a rocketship, cauldron, drone, and recycler.

  • The cauldron
  • The recycler
  • The drone - Both of the two drones from Get Famous require either a powered lot, or being off-lot in order to work.
  • The rocketship

  • The client is complaining about frequently breaking items. We've checked the property and found that the place is filthy, full of bugs, haunted, and right by a volcano.

  • The "Filthy" lot trait
  • The "Spooky" lot trait - Ghosts can autonomously break objects, and at least one per night will appear on "Spooky" lots (including child ghosts).
  • The "Volcanic Activity" lot trait
  • The "Creepy Crawlies" lot trait

  • The client wants an en-suite with shower and toilet, but the smallest possible size. They have 3 spaces to consider: 3x1 closet, a 2x2 office, and a 1x1 corner space where their Servo recharges. They've allowed bb.moveobjects for this.

  • The closet
  • The office
  • The corner space - With a little trial and error, a toilet and shower (Snowy Escape or Discover University) can both fit in a 1x1 tile space (and still function). With the shower just above the toiler, size down the toilet by 1, then move it into the wall far enough to see the shower drain. With both side-by-side, move the shower and toilet to opposite sides of the middle line (on the tile grid). The toilet may still need to be backed up into the wall, but can remain its normal size and still function.

    • The client wants a home with a waterside lot, neighbors out of sight (they still want neighbors, though), and lots of trees.

      Edited: 3 wrong. 75%. That's a C. Guess I'm eligible for the next course. :)

Got wrong: 3A Candle (I think the fact that some candles are technically lamps and therefore save confused me.)

Even though I had the bees correct for honey/wax and no skill building, I wasn't aware of the swarms' gathering function. I thought the "collect swarm" option meant the swarm goes into the inventory for moving lots and therefore never clicked it. My lazybutt bees are gonna be busy from now on!

Edit: 4 wrong. Not good, not horrible. I'm worried about the rest because this should have been one I nailed. But I learned, that's the main thing.?

It's always a pleasure to hear that I've managed to teach someone something new, and you lose nothing, regardless of your score.

      @simgirl1010
Awesome, but the only criteria for entry is that you're willing.

I've a few days free, so the next few courses shouldn't be too far off.
    • @KyreRoen Just like the trial run, I talked myself out of two correct answers.??‍♀️ I applaud you, you found the questions in areas of BB that I rarely go. I can't wait for the next round!
