  • I've been thinking... in actual legend, rather than story, Unicorns really didn't do all that much. Their horn was considered a curative and a purifier against illnesses and poisons, but otherwise, they were more important as a symbol of purity than actually having much magic.

So if they kept to actual legendary unicorns, the most they would do is de-spoil food, as anything else requires another pack and we all know the problems with DLC for DLC. (Food poisoning is in Dine Out, Fugu poisoning in City Living, Illness is in Get to Work, and environmental poisoning is in Eco Lifestyle.)

I know in a lot of stories they do more, but real medieval Unicorns weren't actually that mystical, probably because they were considered "real" rather than mythic.

I'm going to hold out hope that getting access to the horn requires breeding a specail trait, rather than finding an add on accessory, but other than that, I think uncorns not doing much is perfectly in keeping with their medieval traditions.
  • @DaWaterRat You're right about unicorns not being that special in legend, but that would have made it even easier for the developers if you ask me. They could have given unicorns a small power that occult players would appreciate, while using legend as an excuse explanation if other players complained that unicorns don't do enough.

Also, don't sims still get negative moodlets from eating spoiled food anyway, even without Dine Out? Even if not, I can think of other, Horse Ranch-specific uses for unicorns as well. If they're all about purification, they might have beneficial effects on home-made nectar, which would actually be a nice bridge between horses and nectar making because these features don't have anything in common otherwise. It feels like a missed opportunity, a small thing that would have made a big difference in my opinion.

Another legendary detail about unicorns and their obsession with "purity" that I don't think many people know about: They seem to have a problem with human sexuality. According to some sources, only (female) virgins can approach them safely, others run a risk of being killed. With nearly all sims being pansexual and very woohoo-happy by default, imagine the massacre that would ensue if that kind of unicorn was let loose on sim society. :D
  • Another waisted opportunity to add something that goes well with the whole pack. If you do not add unicorns in a horse pack where will you add it?

Like in the Cottage Living where we did not get horses. Such a pity.
  • I like the lore that unicorns can be just as evil as they can be good. We can always use more occults.

    Blessings & Rainbows ? Curses & Fires ?

I'm pretty disappointed about it but honestly that ship sailed the moment they weren't in the trailers so I knew already.

They don't have to stick to Medieval stories, or any one specific source of lore with unicorns. I don't think anyone is asking for some very specific unicorn lore where they do next to nothing. The devs have the freedom to take from any source and do whatever, as long as it's fun and creative. For example, here's what they were capable of in Sims 3:

    • Teleporting themselves and other sims
    • Cure sicknesses and remove curses
    • Start fires
    • Blessing sims
    • Cursing sims
    • Kill or strengthen plants

I am disappointed that unicorns ? aren't a thing but I feel they've kept them back for another pack (I know, wishful thinking)
They knew how popular they were prior. Maybe a mystical pack in the future? Fairy's, unicorns etc.
I do feel the stuff that's lacking is gonna end up in a "My first Horse " stuff pack
  • The point is that unlike in TS3, horses/unicorns are not directly playable here which limits their potential occult powers enormously.

I think you could still have a lot of fun with them. You could just have your sim ask them to bless/curse things. And if you actively mistreat them and ignore their needs, they could take the initiative to hurt you. That'd be so fun.
