Use Invention Constructor without being a scientist?

Hello currently I am playing with an Alien Sim, and to make the game more enjoyable I figured to use the SimRay as one of their abilities for the story. However It seems that I cannot upgrade the freeze ray or use the Invetion constructor without being a scientists. Is there a way to bypass this without being an actual scientists?
