But, for the other worlds, what's the purpose of vacationing in them? They're like residential with very little "vacationing type" activities.

I guess it depends on what you see as a vacationing activity. If you want to solve the mystery of Strangerville without derailing your main plot line, you could do so while on a vacation. If you want your sim to have a hobby but there is little time for a hobby during the week, you could do so during the vacation. Take pictures, climb mountains, fish, work on a farm, complete a collection, etc.
