Have you tried "I'm Surrounded by Idiots." It's an approach to game play where you have a household of sims, but you can only control one of them. All of the others are left to their own devices. There's a legacy challenge where the controlled sim starts on their own and over time gains a spouse that you don't control and some kids that you don't control and, eventually, the challenge passes on to the next generation. There's an asylum version where your controlled sim lives in an institution with a bunch of other random sims who all have the erratic trait. I played a version where the controlled sim is a single parent who has to raise 7 infants to adulthood without being able to control them directly (the worst age? teenagers-their AI is screwy).
I feel like this overall approach might be a good middle ground for you because you can be kind of passive, but you're still controlling things to some extent to get the ball rolling.
