Maybe the devs want to avoid burned meals. In TS2 sims generally do other things while cooking is in progress, and sometimes wind up with burned food if they get too involved with that alternate activity. Still, I wholly agree with the OP.
I loved that though. You sim would get distracted or just start doing other things, and then forget about dinner. For me it added a small touch of realism. I would like that back. Like now, if your sim stops cooking for watching something in the oven, nothing really happens. :/
But I've felt the same way about the coffee and tea pots. I know when I'm making a cup or pot, I walk away, maybe make a bagel or something, then come back to get a cup once it's finished brewing.
Side note: I hate when your sim is making dinner, or just a group meal, or they just served a meal. Other sims will ignore that and either make a single serving of something, or grab leftovers from the fridge.
@GoldenBuffy if you use mods, there's this excellent mod by LittleMsSam that fixes that: https://littlemssam.tumblr.com/post/175406636578/no-auto-food-grab-after-cooking-this-mod-prevents
description:
This Mod adds a custom hidden Buff to all your Sims in the Household when someone cooks. This Buff has a Duration of 120min or 24hrs.
The Buff prevents all Sims to autonomously take a Plate or grab a Snack from the Fridge/Cooler or cook as long as the Buff is active. (It disables the Interaction)
The “Call to Meal” Interaction will remove the Buff and your Sims will eat. You can also take a Single Dish via “Take a Meal” which will delete the Buff of the active Actor.
This Mod is compatible with my “Choose who you Call to Meal” Mod!
I was using that mod, but for some strange reason it would remove the "Call to Meal" option for me. Even after she updated it, it's still doing the same thing. And I honestly think I'm the only person who uses her mods, that is having that issue. lol
Make sure you only choose one of the .package files, they're variations of the same mod and conflict with each other. Also, make sure the script file is either directly inside your mods folder, or at most only 1 folder in. Any more and the game will not detect it. Make sure that's the case, clear the cache, and try again. Also make sure that script mods and cc are turned on in your game settings (2 settings).
If that doesn't fix it, there might be a conflict. You can try the
50/50 method to find the culprit.
Otherwise, try using the
package conflict detector to find conflicts between your mods.
Generally, look for conflicts between tuning files.
