I was very shocked when I went to the Gallery for the first time and found female Sims with the tiniest waists and largest boobs, I didn't even know that was possible. I am happy to say I feel represented by my sim's diverse body proportions, skin and hair :D
I believe that people should be able to create what they want, without feeling as if they should mind a social agenda imposed on them by others. When you look beyond many Sims, many of the weirder ones were uploaded for Gallery-challenges like 'Make me pretty', 'Give me a husband' and so on.
And like I said earlier in this thread, it's very easy to create the Sims that you want in your game by yourself. It's in that respect a bit silly to impose standards on others.
