There are way more flattering ways to make all kinds of sims now. Most of all those more options you had in TS3 you didn't use anyway because they would also give you cartoon exaggerated results.
Yeah genetics I think just need a bit more tweaking. It's odd how I got five pale looking girls from two blue parents.
I've had color issues too,
but from experience I can tell you that a lot of my mixed kids in TS3 had to visit the plastic surgeon because they would grow up to have faces that would make a little kid cry.
Oh yeah I remember that picture. Sorry you are experiencing it too. That's a bummer that happened in the Sims 3. At least with the Sims 4, entering CAS to change the look and do plastic surgery is fairly easy.
I don't really mind though, because at least those kids aren't going to grow to look like the monstrosities they would in TS3.
