It tends to vary. A testing household will usually be a single YA, gender either female or whatever the game gives me to start with (depending on the pack and my mood.)
If I'm starting one of my not-legacies (I intend to play through multiple generations, but I'm not following any legacy rules) then I tend to start with a family of parents and a child or teen aged daughter, but my focal character is the daughter. Siblings may or may not come along later, depending on how I feel it should go.
I'm an adult female myself, and I tend to focus on female characters, though one of my favorite sim stories (though he was three or four generations down) was the male detective that I used for my first run through Strangerville.
