There are a few mods that might be worth looking into.
Expanded Mermaids 2.0 by SpinningPlumbob and certain Custom Content items created by Serinion. Definitely individuals worth looking into.
Regardless, I highly recommend Spinning Plumbob on Patreon as someone to support for gameplay mods.
Edit: Support if you can, but Spinning Plumbob has everything released after early access for free.
