To add to the suggestion of making a story, think of a book you read or a film you've seen - try to re-create a story like that and see how it develops, often it turns out quite differently than you think it would.
You could also choose to send your Sim(s) to a community lot and let them walk around by themselves with free will on - see what happens and maybe there's something you can work with, like a new love interest, friendship with an interesting Sim or a new enemy (do prevent your Sims from killing themselves, unless that's the kind of twist you like in your story ;))
