Well actually. When it is time when the grandparents become too old for the stairs, it might be a good idea to move them into a room on the groundfloor, thus freeing up the master bedroom. But also, the grandparents can themselves, when they find that the kids are NOT leaving the roost, to give up the master bedroom for the new generation.
You wouldn't believe how many old people, for instance in my country, that have set house on their ground floor of their big two story houses and haven't gone up to the second floor in years, and live alone.
