What has happened to lots placement in the worlds?

I agree some of the lot placement is very odd because they end leaving a lot of dead areas that can't be landscaped. The HoB one shown is a nicely built home but why isn't the lot size maximised to use all the available space around it? If I recall there's a lot with a driveway that doesn't meet the road in GF even though I don't have that expansion. The starter homes in Windenburg old town have wasted space too and there's a particularly bad house in Windslar that isn't close enough to the road.
