I aged bella and mortimer to their teenage years. They were both orphans and they lived with Mortimer's aunt Agnes Crumplebottom in Strangerville. When the "mother plant" apocalypse kicked in they all moved to a bunker. Mortimer had a crush on Bella and it was at this point that she reciprocated. They had to hide their relationship from agnes because she didnt approve.
