What is the point of a sack lunch - if any at all?

I sent my teen Sim to school with the first ever sacked lunch I have ever prepared - ever. He didn't eat it - he has a spoiled sack lunch in his inventory. I only notice it when I told him to do...

It's realistic to have to skip a meal in order to eat lunch? You should be able to eat lunch regardless.
