Herbalism - total waste of time with aspiration rewards
Photography - I hate that leveling it means spamming my screenshot folder
Research and Debate - I've yet to find a use for this? I barely send anyone to university though so maybe that's why but even went I have spent a little time there, I've never had a sim need it.
The only use for the skill is to get your Aspiration for Uni. If you don't have that Aspiration, you don't need it. At all. I guess they couldn't think of anything else to stop you from breezing thru the Aspiration, so they had to invent a skill for it? I wish it was used in the Politician and Attorney careers for example.
Ahhh! Ok! Thanks for that, at least I know now that's there's something for it. I've clearly never bothered to play through that aspiration. I was also expecting it to be used in the new careers with that pack and was a little surprised to find it unneeded.
I think it's used in the Law career.
It is? Good! Never done it myself; in fact I think I have only done a third of the careers despite playing for almost 3000 hours... (In fact Agathe, my current Sim, will be my first Community Organizer, ever! :) ) - I would have to agree with Herbalism. I think collecting ingredients in the Sims 4 is boring.
I also don't like the Photography skill. I hate having to open up the camera screen every time I want to take a picture. Why can't I just manually take a bunch photos and gain the skill? It takes way too long to gain the skill. - netney52New SpectatorMaybe DJ never used the skill or rocket science again never really use this skill. Also not used the ones that came with eco lifestyle either.
Edit add bowling to the list hardly ever use it - KathykinsSeasoned NewcomerCharisma is a boooore to level. And talking to a mirror is a no-no for my celebs, because they get the Vain Street quirk.
Mischief is something I never want my sims to do. That and mean stuff.
Also, Dancing....'cause y'all can't dance, sims....Maybe except the Rumba, but I don't think that's really fitting for ever sim either.
Singing, unless I turn off the sound or do something else, like browsing forums - Definitely herbalism, just because it takes sooo long to find the right plants and bugs to do anything useful, it drives me crazy. So now I pretend its not there. Its a shame though, it just feels unplayable.

Before I turned autonomy off, Dancing, Mischief, Video Gaming, and Singing were my least favourite skills because half my sims would pick them up if I took my eyes off of them for five seconds. (It's fine if I want them to have it, but huge skill lists with a bunch of 1s for skills I don't want just really bug me, especially since there is no cheat to remove skills and I don't use mods.)
Now that autonomy is off... it's still Singing, and Photography. Singing because if I am not on the ball during a conversation on a holiday, the sim might decide to sing about the holiday for no good reason when none of the traditions in use would support it. Photography because dear gods, I played the Stylist career ONE time and I loathed the way it works and fills up my screenshot folder.
Must say that the idea of picking up skills is a no issue for me; and the holiday part? Sounds like real life to me. I don't recally a single holiday where Singing is "supported" yet at least half of the holidays (Christmas, New Years, Midsummer) has singing as a thing you just do. "Calico45;c-17688047" wrote:
I'd have to say mischief and photography, though they are a little different in experience. Mischief interactions I can sometimes use and match to Sims, but I absolutely despise that if I notice any of these Sims are missing then they are automatically trolling the forums. It is like having one bit of video game skill so they do it all the time and it drives me crazy.
Photography is just a boring skill to me. You can do cool, active things with it, but as someone with no interest in real life I would have preferred to not have a more active role. Or better yet an auto shoot or something I can make them do so I don't have to fool with it.
Omg, I have a sim with high mischief and all he ever wants to do is troll the forums. I almost deleted him because just the phrase “troll the forums” makes him sound like a predator. And have you seen the socials that come up at Winterfest? Sabotage the tree? Seriously? Who does that?- Kimmer_oneRising TravelerHerbalism.
- GrumpyGlowfishSeasoned NewcomerUnpopular opinion, but I actually quite like both the Mischief and Research & Debate skills. Mischief because it's just the closest thing to an "evil" skill that I have for my morally ambiguous sims, and Research & Debate is a godsend for workaholic students who take four classes per semester because it speeds up homework and presentations.
As for Herbalism, though, I totally agree with everything that has been said. I'd go as far as saying that it's objectively the worst skill in the game because it's expensive (you have to keep paying for trips to Granite Falls to collect insects), a chore to level up (pretty much the only thing you can do to level it up is brew herbal remedies, provided you have the ingredients), and the small (mostly emotional) benefits you get out of it aren't worth the effort. I used this skill for my "witches" before we had actual witches in the game, because those herbal remedies were the closest thing to magic potions we had at the time, but now with Realm of Magic, I almost forgot it even exists.
I'm not a fan of the nature-/plant-related skills in general, to be honest. Flower Arranging is yet another expensive skill (unless you happen to have all the necessary flowers growing on your lot) that has you go through repetitive actions to level up, with the only payoff being emotional moodlets that can easily be produced by other means, but I give it credits for being the only skill in the game that can be used to directly kill other sims (only if they're elders, but still).
Then there's Gardening, a.k.a. taking care of plants that almost never need anything, especially if you put them outside with Seasons installed and they aren't even awake for half of the year. Unless you have a really, really big garden and are faster than the rain when it comes to watering it, even getting to level 4 of this skill can be a challenge. Not because it's hard, but because there's nothing to do. Gardening in TS4 basically does itself most of the time, to a point where I have to wonder why there's even a skill involved at all.
And last but definitely not least on my list of least favourite skills: Juice Fizzing. So useless. If we needed it so bad, I wish it could have been worked into the (also pretty useless) Mixology skill somehow, then maybe Eco Lifestyle would have come with a 5-level Candle Making skill instead, rather than lumping that together with Fabricating. I just don't see the point of Juice Fizzing at all. - KittybassNew SpectatorFabrication is my least favorite.
