I play on Long, because I like having time to screw around doing whatever. Normal makes me feel like I need to put my sims' noses to the grindstone.
I did tweak some of the stages, though, I shorted baby, toddler, and child a little bit, and lengthened elder. Sometimes my sims take a while to find someone to have kids with, and with Elder as its default length, even on long lifespans, they were almost always dead or about to be by the time their first grandkid came along, and I found that sad!
