Well the way it is formulated in the blog seems to suggest your sims will have to complete these activities : "traditions to complete that make progress to your sim having an awesome time celebrating". That sounds similar to the checklists in the events we already have, at least that's what it made me think of.
I do think it will be better than the events as it will be customisable, so the checklist will only include things that we decided we wanted to do on that holiday. I'm hoping that we can select a bunch of things that fit that holiday and then we can just pick and choose on the day which we want to do. Whereas events are just random instructions that might not fit what you want to do, like flirt 10 times, have 3 sims play a game etc.
